IDE1 Optical Drive issues

I have two optical drives in my computer. Both are LG. One is a DVD-RW and the other just a DVD-ROM.
the problem is, that only one of them at a time will be recognized by my computer.
I have them plugged into the mobo through the IDE1 port on the same cable in a master and slave. Only one will work @ a time.
I've used different cables to connect them to the motherboard but that didn't work.
I've also tried to force my BIOS to recognize the other drive in the CMOS options, but it acts like its not there.
Both have adequate power to them, and will open and close, ect. when plugged in.
I also have the latest bios version.

I know this sounds confusing... but any help would be greatly appreciated.

My computer is:
AMD: Athlon 64 X2 5200+ @ 2862 MHz
Mobo: Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 v.2
RAM: 4GB Mushkin DDR2 PC2-6400
OS: Vista 64bit
VC: EVGA 8800 GTS 320MB

Have you checked the jumpers? It sounds like a jumper issue, perhaps those drives use a cable select configuration.
