Idea behind the tremere

As I understand it, clan Tremere of V:tM fame came out of the plot of Ars
Magica (produced, I believe, by White Wolf at the time). My question then
is, where did the idea of House Tremere come from? What was the
inspiration? Anyone know?

AFAIK, Ars Magica (not by WW, but by Atlas Games at the time) featured a
Hermetic House Tremere of mortal mages. Dunno who had the brainwave to turn
them all into Cait- ehrm, Clan Tremere. 😉

Atlas Games took over Ars Magica after White Wolf.

And let's not talk about what White Wolf *did* to Ars Magica during the
relatively brief time they owned it. =P

OK, we won't!

To answer the original question, House Tremere was the Hermetic house most
capable in Certamen and the most adept at backdoor politics. According to
the Ars backstory, Tremere, amongst the founders, was the least powerful,
but his great innovation was the wizard's duel, of which he was the Master.

Note - I wish that there was an Ars Magica/Storyteller Forms and Techniques
conversion somewhere out there. That would work perfectly with other Dark
Ages products. I find the 4 Pillars too limiting for my conception of
original Ars Magica Magi.

I had always assumed that they made Clan Tremere as their
"explanation" of mages back when Vampire was the only World of Darkness
game (sort of like how Gangrel are werewolf-ish and so on.) Then when
they released actual mages into the world they realized they had this
Tremere thing going, so they built it into the mage metaplot as one of
the Hermetic houses.
The actual name "Tremere" could have come from Ars Magica, for all I
know.

Not exactly. The Tremere were a house from Ars Magica, and that was one of
the selling points for me when I picked up V1.

My eyes bugged all those years ago when I saw a *Clan* Tremere. Before Mage
came out, many of us thought that Mage would be a modern Ars Magica, due to
the Tremere Vampire/Ars Magica link.

I hope that the new Mage background will be loose enough to include the Ars
Magica vintage Order of Hermes in a modern context.

Sorry, I knew that. What I was wondering is if there was some
historic/legendary/mythical background to the fall of (the) Tremere *before*
Ars Magica.

The question arose, for those interested, out of curiosity of how V:R will
handle magic. If I am right, there was no reason for the Tremere to exist
outside the history of WWGS.

Sorry for going over old info.

I'm not sure I understand, however. Are you asking if House Tremere had
some sort of existence before Ars Magica/WW games?

I believe that the Tremere were created whole cloth for Ars, and that the
above is correct.

Don't worry. I am just amazed that I seemed to actually know more about it
than folks here. I must be getting old...

I was more looking at the inspiration behind Ars Magica.

I guess that answers the question :) Thanks.

No idea. But then, I'd speculate that they brainstormed some mage
archetypes, and came up with the "well-organzied hierachical" as well as
with "weird and mysterieous", "scholary", "fireballs!", and after that
chose names of vaguely fitting sound and connotation.

My second Ed is by Lion Rampant, the third by WW, forth by Atlas.

White Wolf, at the time of 2nd Ed AM was a gaming zine done by the Wieck
brothers.
