Ideal settings to OC i7

Heya,

I have browsed this site for a long time but am new to the forums, but any help will be greatly appreciated.

I will just give you what all i have in my tower then hopefully that information will help you help me

-Intel i7 920
-Asus P6T X58
-6GB (3 x 2GB) Corsair 1600MHz DDR3 Triple Channel
-GTX 260 (ver. 216)
-Cooler Master V8
-OCZ GameXStream 800W PSU

I am more familiar with overclocking using FSB. I am still working on getting all that I can find out about tinkering with settings like QPI and BCLK. What I am trying to get the best mesh of is a mix of OC my memory to work as effective as possible with the CPU. I have changed my setting from default but I am not sure if its the best route to go.

What I have done so far is change the BCLK to 180 and kept the multiplyer at 20x. After that I changed the DRAM Frequency to 1443Mhz, then lastly changed the voltage to 1.25V. Other techno sites of sorts reccommend not going higher than that voltage for the CPU altough Intel says that you can go to 1.65V. After I changed these settings I loaded CPU-Z. I am not sure why it says that the Core Freq. is 3.6Ghz (which makes sense) however the QPI Freq. is around 3.25Ghz.

What my question is, is with this hardware set-up, what would you suggest to have my Frequency at for this particular memory (would I be able to go higher), and how does the Core Freq. change from the QPI Freq.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

The core frequency is the speed of your CPU... don't worry about the QPI freq., it will have no effect on performance.

Your RAM should be good up to 1600MHz, it's rated to do that speed after all!

That 1.65V refers to the maximum DRAM voltage. If you put 1.65V on the uncore or the cpu cores it will burn out in a matter of hours. You can however go higher than 1.25V if your cooling is up to it. I'm watercooling my i7 920 and I've got the vcore turned up to 1.36V. I would avoid going higher then 1.4 though.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. Is it unstable to set my multiplyer to 21? I ask because the systems I have seen at 4.2GHz set their mult. to 21 and the BCLK to 200.

Chances are that those systems did not have a 920 in there. The i7 920 has a maximum setable multiplier of 20 (it only ups to 21 if turbo mode is enabled) - more likely they had the 940 in there, which allows the user to have a multiplier if 21.

You probably wont have to push that i7 to high... 3.2 is all i would put it at. I have seen what it can do at that speed... any faster and u are insane
