[SOLVED] Ideal Video Card Upgrade for Socket 775 Motherboard?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a video card upgrade for a socket 775 motherboard (Asus P5Q-E)? I've just upgraded the machine with an SSD and a 3.33GHz Xeon CPU. The current video card is an ATi 4870 1GB. The computer has 8GB DDR2 RAM. The power supply should have enough lines to power a newer card - the current card requires 2x 6-pin PCI-E lines.

There are 2x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots

I would consider an SLI configuration, if it's feasible.

I have an old dinosaur tucked in the corner. 775 socket with a Q6600 core2quad. Never OC’ed. Ran it with 8GB 1333mhz DDR3. I had it paired to a GTX650ti, which i still have. It ran BF3, BF4,DayZ etc without any issues what so ever. Maybe a GTX980 or GTX1060/1070 would be a good fit. If you could find a R9 290 or RX560/570 would be a good card for it for a bit cheaper

GTX 1050 2 GB. No doubts. Doom 2016 running at 67-98 fps at MAX settings, with only 4 GB of RAM DDR2 and an old Q9550.

Maybe a GTX980 or GTX1060/1070 would be a good fit. If you could find a R9 290 or RX560/570 would be a good card for it for a bit cheaper

An RX 570-580 or GTX 1050/ti/1060/1650 would be a better fit for an older system like the OP has. A GTX 1070 would be a waste of money, heck the 580 or 1060 would be a bit of a waste as well.

Some of the newer cards will not work with legacy non UEFI bios. I bought some used XFX brand RX 460's for my 775 boards. That particular one in the XFX brand has a dual bios. I have heard some of the Sapphire brand cards have a Bios switch on them. I think I saw where the Sapphire RX580 has a switch but not sure. I have modified Xeon's on mine also.

Taking that further I would say a used GTX 700 series or RX 300 series would probably be the best fit for such an old system.

Thanks everyone. These are good things to consider. The motherboard is an older legacy make. I’m hoping most of the GTX 1050 cards would be compatible. Is 2GB enough or would 4GB be overkill?
