Ideas for a new budget & o'clockable cpu setup?

Hi.
I'm thinking of getting an asus a7n8x mobo to run a new xp cpu. I currently have a kt7-a with a 1gig t'bird - which is showing its age.
I was thinking of going down the cheapy route and seeing how much I could overclock a lowish spec cpu, i.e. something like a XP2200+. Am I right in believing that the "B" cores run at lower temps and so provide more o'clocking capabilities?

I don't think it's worth spending £450 on a 3000xp barton core if I can get 75-80% the performance and spend only £100-150.

In the best of worlds, I'd also get a decent corsair xms stick running at 3200 providing 200MHz fsb support. Is this realistic with a XP2000-XP2400 range cpu. I'm believing the principle that I'd rather have a lower multiplier and high fsb to get the benefit of the increased bandwidth.

I'd appreciate your suggestions.

And so to come to the point of this query: what kind of cooler do you realistically need to do some reasonable (but not silly cooling requiring water / promethia based systems). I ask because I've invested in getting a quiet system - previously, my CLabs GF4 4400 was driving me up the wall - I bought one of those Zalman vga coolers, and with some strategically placed system fans, it's as cool but at a fraction of the noise.

I currently have a Globalwin cak II 58 which I love for its quiet / slow fan speeds. http://www.globalwin.com.tw/new-product/cak-II58.html

Is there any chart which indicates what kind of RTherm you get for a list of coolers? The latest cooler roundup on THG doesn't mention my cooler, and I would be prepared to change, but I don't have a point of reference.

So to cut this silly long message to a one or two-liner question:

- What XP cpu gives me the best "bang for buck" - if possible to obtain 200mhz fsb on an asus a7n8x

- Without going silly on overclocking, what's a decent cpu cooler which remains quiet? Is my existing globalwin sufficient? Is there a chart with RTherm / max recommended cpu speeds for a given cpu cooler?

Sorry for carrying on for so long. Just feel better having managed to put those muddled questions in writing 😉

Thanks for any suggestions.

The slk-800 is a great heatsink- it is huge, so you don't need a high rpm fan to keep it cool. I've heard some of the new Zalmans are decent coolers, and are extremely quiet.

If i was you, i'd go for an ABIT NF7-s v2, a £45 athlon 1700+ JIUHB from here. The motherboard will let you change the multiplier, and with the right RAM you should hit 200FSB / 2.3Ghz with a bit of voltage adjustment. Make sure you dont scrimp on the PSU.

ps. not sure about cooling. my thermoengine is still doing me proud. I took off the 60mm delta fan and screwed on a normal one and it keeps things under 50 C at load. My case fans are louder.

Thanks for that. Sounds like a good and cheap idea
PS is a chieftec 360W. I've had no probs so far, and that's with 2 cdrom drives, 3 hdd and 3 8cm fans.

BTW, and particular reason why the ABIT mobo?

the new asus boards (rev 2) no longer have problems getting to 200mhz fsb. they used to. abits are still the best overclocking boards, but they're having a lot of trouble with serial ATA. i dunno if you were planning on using that. anyway if you're just trying to go to 200 you should be ok

I've heard many good things about the abit. People i know who have used various nforce2 boards generally rant on about this one. I cant say which is better rom personal experience..
I'm hopefully getting one myself soon. then i will tell you 😀

to be honest i cant really back this up with facts, its just the general opinion i get from chatting to people. call me flamebait 😛

I used the original revision of the Abit Nf7-s, and its a complete piece of junk. Doesnt overclock at all, and has some ide problems. The new revision is supposed to be pretty good though, havent had a chance to pick one up yet, currently on an EPoxy 8rda+

Instead of Rdram, why not just merge 4 Sdram channels...

I would get, for maximum overclockability, a XP 2500+ Barton on an Abit NF7-S v2.0 (ONLY VERSION 2.0) mobo with an Ice Berg 1 Water cooling system, which provides equal or a bit better cooling than the BEST air cooled non peltier systems. It costs around $100US(80UK?)and is whisper quiet. If you do not want water cooling, go with a Swiftech MCX462+ or a Thermalright SLK-800U (The Abit board should be able to fit it) with a Vantec Tornado fan. Keep in mind, this setup will be about 4x higher in audible aparent sound level, at about 65dBA, while providing slightly less cooling power.

eBay, kick ass!
