[SOLVED] Ideas wanted to upgrade GPU from GTX 670, using rest of (ancient?) rig

Hi all - I have an older custom tower from 2012. Built it to be near state of art at the time but obviously dated now, can’t even play fortnite over 60 FPS capped even with everything on low. Clearly time to upgrade at least one component, was thinking of starting with GPU.

I am not gaming in 1080p, only using an older Dell U2412M display @ 1920 x 1200. These days mainly playing Fortnite (time suck but fun w. friends), plus some more demanding games like Hitman or Witcher 3 also (Witcher 3 runs fine now, Hitman 1 definitely choppy).

current build:
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V
CPU: i5-3570k @ 3.4GHz (never overclocked)
16GB RAM
PSU: Corsair CX-500M
GPU: a single Nvidia GTX 670
HD: 100GB ss with 500gb disk (prob will upgrade latter, disk noises are louder than the fans!)

1) Is it overkill to look at a 1070/1080/1080Ti/2070? Is there better value option out there to match my usage and other components?

2) Can I even run one of the abovementioned with my other components (processor/PSU/mobo)?

3) I love a quiet rig and there is a near-silent option for this in the 1070 (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-SILENT-Graphics-08G-P4-6678-KR/dp/B077Z6LFQ1) not sure if this exists for 1080 or 2070. Quiet fans are the best. I have no cooling in this tower besides my quiet fans (antec) The current GTX 670 has been rather quiet unless at full load.

4) I think there is a second GPU slot on this board that I am not using with a single card (?) could I buy an older cheaper unit and run it alongside my GTX 670 and improve performance that way?

I'd look at a 2060 in your case or wait and see what the 1660 has to offer if it actually comes out. I think either would be a perfect fit for you

Thanks for the suggestion Supahos. I am trying to figure out if buying another older one and running them SLI would be better than a single newer 2060 / 1660.

Most games have zero support for sli. Most modern titles that do gain 20% fps... Some actually lose fps just for having the second GPU in the computer even if you disable sli

The video card you purchase depends upon what games you will play, the screen resolution, 1080p for example and screen refresh rate.

For 1080p a GTX 980 Ti, GTX 1070 or RTX 2060 will be outstanding video cards.

You might be able to find a good used video card, such as on ebay, just make sure the seller has at least 6 reviews and all 100%, if the seller has 1,000 reviews then 99% average will be fine. My son is still using an intel i5 3570K, I gave him my old AMD R9 290 and it works great at 1080p resolution. I am using an MSI GTX 980 Ti Lightning and it does great gaming at 1080p.
