Got a friend who got a barton 3200+ off Ebay, isn't stable at 2200mhz. We're thinking counterfiet.

Anybody know how to identify a fake from a real one?

Thanks

Found these things on the net. I would take the first one with a grain of salt.

Here's an example of a counterfeit identification tag.

You can see the letters are not properly aligned & aren't the same sizes.

Then this although I don't know if it would help you

AMD said customers can identify genuine AMD products by a so-called "Processor-in-a-Box" sticker. The label, which has been in place since 2003, includes a unique serial number and a 3-D hologram used for tracking, distribution, authenticity and warranty service

Any possibility he got a hold of one of these faulty chips from a week or so ago? "Story Change Defective load have shipped into channel" Might be a real XP3200+, but a faulty real XP3200+?

What do you think?

Thanks everybody.

I sent him a link showing the counterfiet lable.

If the label looks good, might be a "real" 3200+, just faulty. Had not seen that article b4. Interesting.

Yeah Wusy, he's tried upping the vcore, no go.

These stories keep reminding why I don't buy PC components from Ebay
