Identifying graphic cards

Apart from the price factor,how can anyone differentiate between graphic cards in performance ?
I mean does the model nos of graphic cards hold the clue ? If yes,then how you differentiate between a NVIDIA & an ATI/AMD card ?

Usually a higher model number means it's better. You can't assume for example a GT610 is faster than a GTX550Ti though.

The way you can compare AMD and Nvidia cards is by reading reviews of the cards. They're usually tested against cards from the other manufacturer.

Having said that...how will you compare Asus NVIDIA GTX650-E & Asus NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 ?

When comparing cards from the same series, in this case the 6xx, you can assume that the higher number is faster. GTX cards are pretty much always faster than GT cards.
