Idle CPU temperature 93 C on SpeedFan

I recently installed a new PC on Asus P8Z68 VLX motherboard and I7 Core 2600K Box CPU, I installed the heatsink and fan which came with the boxed CPU.

When I read the CPU temperature through the BIOS software or through the ASUS Probe II software that came with the motherboard it reads between 36-40 C. But I installed SpeedFan 4.45 and it reads the idle CPU temperature at 93 C. Can this be accurate?

I opened the case and put my finger on the heatsink, it does not feel 93 C or anything close.

My question is Speed Fan accurate or shall I just trust the Asus Probe II reading?

I appreciate your advice.

Thank you in advance

Thanks,

Just installed Speccy it reports almost the same temperatures like the Asus Probe II for the CPU and the Motherboard temperature.

Does this mean I shall be confident that Speedfan measures are not accurate and my CPU will not be damaged?

Ok thanks,

Just installed HWMonitor, it reports temperatures similar to Asus Probe II, range 35-39 C for the CPU.

I assume this is enough evidence to confirm Speedfan is inaccurate. any further checking needed?

blazorthon,
Thanks for your response too, I pressed submit on my previous posts before adding my thanks to you as well.

With a well seated Intel® stock HSF (heatsink/fan) I would expect to see temperatures in the 35c-39c range with the Intel Core™ i7-2600K. With the Intel Core i7-2600K I wouldn't expect to see 93c temperatures on anything less then having the HSF not even making contact with the processor. The Intel Core i7-2600K is a really cool running processor. If you are going to do any overclocking with it you should still look to add a 3rd party cooler to help deal with the increased temperatures.

I think that it's safe to say that Speedfan's numbers were far from accurate.

Thank you all for you quick responses.

The reason I got worried is because when I installed the heatsink/fan I removed it and put back over the CPU about 4 times then I noticed that the thermal paste that was pre-applied on it was a bit jammed, so I was worried that I ruined the thermal paste, and that I should re-apply once again, but based on your answers, a 35-39 C range is normal for a well seated/well installed heatsink/fan.

So I will keep it as is.

A few things:

It is possible, though strange, the speed fan temp is different to the rest. Till date, I do not see a problem with Speedfan temp with the rest. They all show the same temps.

Download real temp application. It is pretty good. Check that for a reconfirmation.

If you remove the heatsink and reinstall, you must clean the old thermal paste completely and reapply every time. Period.
