I bought this other card a couple of years ago and the cords fit in this one but not the other. I dunno why.

What do you mean "for some odd reason they don't fit"?

1394a and 1394b are totally different connectors, you need different cables for them. Not so odd

Make sure you are plugging things in the right way (up/down) and in the right ports and not mixing up the a cables trying to fit in the b slots.

What are you connecting together? The 4 pin firewire connections are usually on devices like cameras not on the computer. You would get a cable with a 6 or 9 pin on one end for the computer and with the smaller one at the other end for the device. I am connecting my video camera to the computer to transfer my home movies

1394 Learning Experience
I had a user wanting to connect a Leica camera (on a microscope) to a laptop via Firewire.
The camera had a 9 pin and the laptop had a 4 pin.
Laptop would not see the camera. Per Leica, this was because the 4 pin did not provide enough current.
I used a desktop with a 6 pin ==> 9 pin card / connection and it worked.
