.........I wouldn't have enough to blow my nose today.

I collect graphics, and I've been saving them to this
hard drive. When I get a bunch, I burn them to a CD,
then delete them from the HD and start over. So far
I've burned 2 CDs and was just getting ready to burn
a third when the light bulb went off over my peabrain.

Miracle, Miracle, Miracle- these are *700*MB CDs,
not 70MB. I could have put 10 times the amount on the
first two! ~*AUGH*~

OWFI. Looking through about 700 images will be
quicker than having to go through 7,000 eh? LOL

It's a ah heck when a lightbulb pops, isn't it? :/

Not a problem... if you didn't "Finish" the CD's. You'd be able to
'multisession' them.

True, but it's also a bit of a waste, having only used a tenth of the
space.

Our current idiot, "John Doe", can give first hand experience about
wastage and running at only a tenth of maximum capacity.

Well, I "finished" them, but thank goodness they were bought
recently- they cost very little. And it was only two of them.
But that feeling like a complete idiot will last awhile. LOL

Can't you "unfinish" them with a lighter? Just don't balance at the top of
the stairs while doing it! 😉

Every time I burn a CD I feel guilty about wasting 90% of it, so I go
digging around on the HD to find stuff that "needs" backing up and fill up
the empty space with it. DVD's are even worse. Try finding 4 GB of stuff to
fill the empty space. I always find either too little or too much.

I've stopped doing that. I've got too many dvds with 20+ anime on it of
all different series. Drives me nuts. So I bought some external
enclosures and slapped some HDDs in them, and now I save up until I have
at least half of the series. At that point I probably have half of
another series and put them on the disk as best I can. Anything left
over I try and fit on as few cds as possible. I've stopped zipping,
almost lost a whole series because of that, luckily my burner in my
desktop could read it, my dvdrom in my laptop (new one and old one)
couldn't. Peeved me right off. 😀 One of these days I'm going to get
around to reorganizing my older dvds, and get rid of any shows that I
didn't complete. To hard to get them now. All are fansubs and I've
been buying the good series that I've come across in the NA release. I
can't wait till Air TV makes it over here.

I think it was about 2 years ago that I read several horror stories
about zip drives dying without notice, so I hastily moved eveything
I had on zip disks to my HD, then sorted & copied the files to CDs.
My zip drive is an external Iomega unit, and the dang zip disks
were so expensive that I only have 5 or 6 of them.

I fix that by downloading complete series.

If the series are good quality, and the rippers were sane, it's probably
spread out over about 9GB for a season, giving you half a season per DVD.

I'm pretty addicted, so when I'm home I'm downloading constantly and
watching as soon as I can. As a matter of fact, I've got to burn some
stuff off before I go back to work tomorrow. 1 movie, a couple of 12 ep
series, a 26 ep series, 2 eps I haven't watched yet, and an ep of the
new Dr. Who. :)

That having been said I have been known to download series in on shot,
aka a batch.

And of course, even CD-R's have a finite shelf-life. Then the data
starts getting iffy.

Reminds me of that fortune teller joke... Anyway:

Don't leave 'm out in the sun, and to be safe probably copy'm to DVD in
half a decade or so, if you really want them secure.

My data stored on DVD/CD lasts till infinity, defined by the amount of
time I care about it.

Just to reassure me, a DVD disc can also be used to hold data
like photos and graphics, can't they? And what about programs
and apps?

Oh, certainly. Just burn it as a DVD-Rom. But of course you do need a
DVD burner for this.

CDs for photo's are fine, though. Depending on scan/download size, you
can fit hundreds of photo's on it, so... yeah.

Whew! Thanks, Frank- I thought there was a qualifier, but I couldn't
remember it. <burns to memory- ROM = Read Only Memory>

Doublecheck that. Most laptops have DVD-Rom and CD-RW (so only DVD
reading, with CD burner). If you have a DVD burner in your laptop,
though, you are officially Cool.

Well, Cooler.

Also, while you're doublechecking, check whether it's a DVD+R or DVD-R
(or both) burner. Velly impoltant.

😀 I'm Cooler!!!!!
I've got three symbols on the drive bay door:
DVD-ROM
CD/RW
DVD/RW

PLUS, I just RTFM and double-checked that. :)
Page 40. Says so right there, with little pics of the symbols
and what they mean.

Can't I be Cool? Please? Huh?

Okay, back to page 40...............

Okay, it says "DVD+ReWritable". So it's got a 'plus' sign.

What's the difference, Frank?

It's a different standard of media. Probably just a difference of where
the data tracks on the disc are, or something. But a DVD+R disc will not
work (for writing, at least) in a DVD-R drive.

Also, there's some compatibility issues with things like DVD (movie)
players. Opinions are divided, but most say DVD+R works better in more
devices. Except, of course, for my X-Box, which only appears to take DVD-R.

Now see, this is one area where I think they definitely should have
kept to just one standard. Didn't they learn from the VHS/BetaMax
schmozzle?
The "+" or "-" is simply too subtle. Why not make "X-Box Discs"
instead of "DVD-" discs? Sheesh.

Maybe it's just *me*.....................but thank you!!
