looking for to maximize my RAM as I go. wasn't easy to find 8GB alone 16GB. Found this one but looks like fora server. What are the downsides.

So there is DDR3 and inside it, the ECC/Reg type and inside this one, the So-Dimm type. What are they used for?

Gonna be using the thing mostly for 3D modeling and rendering.

Cheers

I use a server board in my computer and have no problem with the ECC memory, in fact I haven't seen a BOD in ages. However, today's mother boards use multiple memory channels, so you will lose speed if you only have one bank with memory in it. You are better off buying (2) 8GB memory sticks and gain the increase in speed. If I were you, and you're not doing mission critical work on your pc, save the money and buy (2) 16GB sticks (non ECC).

PrO just be carefull with newer mb and filling all four ram slots. Look at the ram qal guild for tested ram for four slots. A lot of newer mb have issues with some ram with four slots filled. If your going for 32 g using eight g sticks by the two kits together to get a matched set.

AGREED get match sets but this always dont work but its a far better option btw why so much ram most pc,s run just awesome/ swell with only 8? and alot of them waste the extra ram are you doing something extensive? with your pc? is this a laptop cuz you be throwing money out the window? some specs please thanks

Registered and Unregistered DIMMS, normally only falls in with server mobos, and basically it adds up to Buffered DIMMS, it's also more often than not ECC (Error Correcting Code) DRAM, though not always....In general speak expensive, slow and to a degree outdated. Stay away for pc.

Thanks for the insights guys. Around here I can only find 8 GB per stick either sold in 2 or 4 pack. So I'll stick with it for now. I wouldn't mind a 2-pack of 16 though, ehehe
