If i can run a 4890, can i handle a 5870?

possibly premature, but after some more tinkerign with the PSU cables i think ive finally got my 4890 running smoothly.

i noticed that a 500w power supply is recommended for the 4890 & the 5870. my PC supposedly has a 460w psu. does anyone know, or can anyone safely guess, if a 5870 draws more power than a 4890? i was under the impression its a smaller die & therefore might actually be more efficient.

You might be able to but at the expense of limiting the lifespan of your PSU. Running it that hard is like running your car's engine at top RPM's all the time.

I'd advise getting a PSU with more breathing room.

hd5870 actually uses slightly less than a hd4890, but not by much. If your psu is some cheap no-name unit, it might be a bit risky.. But if it's some good brand like corsair etc with 'strong' 12V rail(s), I'd think it would be just fine (provided the rest of the system isn't some power eating monster lol)
