Solution
You will most likely need to reinstall. Even if you didn't, I would advise it for optimal performance.

No problem with the key. This will help you find your key. Just run it, take a note of it and happy reinstalling.

Not at all...
The software is entirely stored on your hard drives & nothing is stored on a motherboard.
As long as you are using the same disk drive in your system, changing any other component will not require you to reinstall software.

enjoy your upgrade...!

This isn't true. You can avoid a reinstall if the chipset / IO are the same, basically if you are using the same chip architecture. When windows sets up, it optimizes communication between all the components. It would be strongly adviesable to reinstall.

See my above message for your key

You shouldn't be going around giving people awful advice, especially if you don't really know the answer. This is a forum designed to help people, not boost your ego and satisfy your thirst for recognition.

1. Was this a preinstalled OEM installation? If so, you need to buy a new OS with the motherboard change.

2. If it was an installation you bought and installed, you can discover the license key via MagicalJellybean or Belarc Advisor.

3. For a motherboard change, a reinstall is always recommended. Often required.

Thanks for further clarification. It is essentially as I said above.

Please disregard gautamgr8's message. You have 2 moderators, with deep knowledge of the matter, confirming the correct answer.

I apologise for my half baked knowledge.
I know that as long as the motherboard chipset is the same then you should not have any problems.I was actually trying to find out more on the topic after posting but came back to see so much had already happened on the post.
I hope I am excused

Ok, just wanted to make sure he gets the right details.

Next time, check BEFORE posting or just leave that thread to others who know about the topic.

All the best

Wow.. Thanks everyone for giving me advice and yes i built my pc and used OEM.. I'm not really sure how to re-install windows xD..

Again...was it preinstalled, or something you bought and installed?

It was something i had bought and installed myself.

Then discover the license key, and be prepared to reinstall the OS and applications.
MagicalJellybean or Belarc Advisor.

Ahhh, I see.. Well would it be possible to put some programs on a usb and put them back on my fresh pc when i re-install?

Only if you have the install whatever for those applications. You can't just 'copy' it and put it back.
It works for some, but very much not all.
