What kind of Modem?

What kind of PC?

Does the PC have an ethernet port?

Virgin media superhub 2 connected to a asus m32cd pc that has an ethernet port

If the ethernet on the motherboard is gigabit (most are) then the port will automatically crossover. But since that would be a "switch" port to client, a straight through cable would be appropriate any way.

What kind of ethernet. Most GB network cards have auto mdix so they don't need to use cross-over cables

The Superhub 2 is also a router that has 4 Ethernet ports on it, use a STANDARD not crossover cable to plug right into it and you are good to go.

The need for crossover cabling is pretty much obsolete since modern ethernet ports are auto-mdix (self configuring).
