I would like to change my existing CPU, and was told I could install ANY processor aslong as I had a motherboard of the same brand....Is this true?

Solution
No.

First, AMD doesn't make motherboards. Someone made the motherboard. It may use AMD chipsets, but there is no AMD motherboards.

Second of all, the socket of the motherboard has to match the socket of the CPU.

Third, whoever told you that is an idiot and shouldn't be allowed to give advice about computers, or probably even own one.

NOT true, it depends on the motherboard socket, AMD works with FM2 and AM3+ (the ones i know of and have heard most about) You have to tell us the model of your motherboard, or better yet the socket it is compatible with, and we can tell you which CPU is compatible (in a very general way, fm2 is compatible with Phenom and Athlon and AM3+ with Phenom II and FX)

Hi Callum,
Whoever told you this is incorrect. In order for a CPU to be compatible with a motherboard, it must be of the same socket type. The socket type is the number of pins that the processor/motherboard has. An example of a socket type is LGA1150. This is the current Haswell CPU socket, which you can only use with an Intel 4th generation processor. What the person who told you this probably was getting at, is that an AMD processor will not work with an Intel motherboard. So the answer to your is no. Make sure your CPU has the same socket as the motherboard you have. By the way, what is your CPU?

I will be phoning PC World tomorrow and telling them they are idiots. ^_^ So if I wanted to install an AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ in the place of an AMD A4-5000 in my friends laptop, would this be possible?
