If i have twin usb controllers, how can i get the p2 controller work if the main (p1) controller isn't working properly ?

The title is actually the question... i want to make the player 2 controller work when the player 1 doesn't because it's left analog stick broke and i want to use the player 2 controller if possible until i can afford to buy new controllers also .... player two controller is attached to player 1 controller and they both are connected to pc via one usb cable... so can i like... cut the usb cable from the main controller and tie it with the player 2 controller instead?

Rather buy cheap controller than fiddling with windows registry.
Under 10$.
Also PS2/PS1 gamepads (original) with adapter are more durable than most of controllers, same for xbox ones.
