So today I upgraded my laptop from 8.1 to 10, no issues. My thinking that I'm a genius used the same key to download 10 on my desktop. Which went off without a hitch all the way until I got to the desktop screen to find that I was not technically activated.

In the settings page I saw an option that said rollback to 8.1 And I was wondering if anybody knew If I could do that then use my ten key to activate it on my desktop.

Thanks!

No you cannot do that. You only have one OS, either Win 8.1 OR WIn 10.
If you upgrade from 8.1 to 10, you don't get to use both, no matter how you swap things around.
so you have a laptop with windows 8.1 and you upgraded it to windows 10, but put in your desktop windows 10 product key right?

If so, then I think you can just deactivate windows 10 then punch in the windows 8.1 product key. Idk if that will work, but it's worth a shot.

If it doesn't, then call Microsoft.

How would I deactivate windows 10?

I know my 8.1 Key is tied to my motherboard. But Ten allowed me to use the key on my desktop-it just wont activate since another computer is currently using it. My ten key is a completely different key.

Damn it are you sure? It gave me a completely separate key. Is it just because they 'know' my computer? I just really don't want to have to spend an additional $200 to get it on my main computer.

Yes I am sure.
If you try to install that WIndows 10 on the new PC, it will ask 2 things:
Why am I not seeing an existing Windows 7 or 8.1 to upgrade from?
or
Where is the Windows 10 license from the Windows 10 you bought?

It knows the difference between a license key that was upgraded, and a license key that was purchased.

1 license, 1 PC. They are not giving you a second, free, OS. You bought one, you get to use one. Either the original 8.1, or Win 10 that you upgraded from that 8.1.

It is fully updated however my Windows 7 on my desktop is not a legitimate copy. It has a code attached to it as I noticed with a program, but was giving to me on a disk by my friend. I was hoping that the Windows 10 key I would be given would finally allow me to get a legitimate copy on my desktop but that seems not to be the case. I can not spend two hundred dollars right now to get Win 10 Pro.

As it clearly seems now I will be able to use the key, so my next question is how long does the free update last? If I were to buy Win 7 now would I be able to still get in on it?

try recovering your pc if your pc orginally came with windows 7 or 8 and then try upgrading to 10 that will give you legitimate key because microsoft is not giving windows 10 free for all they are only giving it to legitimite users of windows 7 or 8 and if you have windows 7 stay with it windows 10 is not worth upgrading

'Not legit' Win 7 or 8.1, upgraded to Win 10, will remain 'not legit'.
See here:

You can buy Win 7 or 8.1, and update it to Windows 10, up until July 2016.
Or, just buy Windows 10, Pro or otherwise. Price is about the same.

Any particular reason for Pro instead of Home? Only real difference is some features. Performance is the same.

If there's nothing substantially different between the two of them then I'd like to get Home. I guess I missed my chance on the upgrade deal, should I just rollback to Windows 7 now? What effects would an unactivated copy have on my computer?

No, you haven't missed on the upgrade deal. But since Win 10 is out, no real reason to buy 7 or 8.1 and then upgrade.

For unactivated copy? Read my second link above.
No feature updates, constant nagging about activating, possibly all black screen every once in a while.
And the knowledge that you are using software you haven't paid for.

Okay thanks. I'm going try to get Win 10 as soon as possible, thanks for taking the time to help me.
