IF interpreters

How about multiplayer ones? Two people could play as different
characters, chatting to each other as on IRC (when they are nearby) and
figuring out solutions to puzzles together. Puzzles could require them
to split up and do different things then meet somewhere. Their
characters could have different abilities. Are there any like that?

I don't know of telnet or IRC ones. Once upon a time there was a
bot-based interpreter on ifMUD, though it's not running right
now. Information on ifMUD is available at http://ifmud.port4000.com/.

As for multiplayer, not as you describe. You're wandering more into
MUD/MUSH territory there. There *is* an interpreter available that
will let you collaborate on the same (single-player) game. It's called
Zinc, and it's available from http://zinc-if.sourceforge.net/.

There's been a lot of discussion about multiplayer IF, but almost zero
implementation. Even games in which you switch protagonists, such as
the Earth and Sky series, are single player.
