[SOLVED] If my 1080p 144hz can support up to 8k 144hz because of my gpu, is there any point to buying a native 1440p 144z or 4k 120hz monitor?

My gpu is an RX 6800 and supports up to 8k 144hz my monitor is a 22 inch 1080p 144hz monitor that I am perfectly satisfied with, I don't really understand the point of buying a native 1440p 144hz or 4k 120hz monitor when my monitor can technically already go up to these resolutions and refresh rates.

If my monitor cannot display a higher than 1080p resolution then why does windows allow me to change the resolution higher than 1080p? Would setting the resolution higher than 1808p in games make the game look sharper even though it is scaled down?
If the monitor tells Windows "I'm an 8K monitor" Windows has no way to tell if it's lying or not. It just transmits an image and the monitor does whatever it wants with that image. In this case it's scaling down to 1080p.

Some 1080p monitors now will identify as having 4K support. This is probably a combination of that plus DSR/VSR which duplicates the same thing on the graphics card letting you select "8K" resolution, as 1080p monitors would not be equipped with connections for...

Where is Windows "allowing" you to change the resolution? Be specific about this *and* the model of your monitor. 99 times out of 100, people are fooled by resolution settings in a number of other areas that are basically supersampling resolutions (and similar technology such as the recent AI-derived ones).
 
Are you sure you're not seeing 8-bit color depth? There's basically only one consumer monitor in *existence* that has 8K resolution and that's a $4000 Dell monitor. You're more likely to win the lottery than find a $100 1080p monitor that can run 8K resolution.
 
I am pretty sure I am not seeing 8 bit color depth. I think the monitor only supports 8 bit color but when I go to the graphics adapter settings and it lists all the modes that are comptible one of the options is 8k 144hz with 32 bit true color. I am pretty sure the 32 bit true color is something that windows just does because every windows pc I have ever used has had it as an option no matter the resolution.

If you could do that and did your monitor would be combining 8 pixels into 1.

32 bit/px is the same as 8 bpc, just different units. 8 bits per component × 4 components = 32 bits per pixel.

The weird thing is that when I was trying to benchmark valorant using MSI afterburner to see how it would perform I was wondering why the overlay was so small. As it turns out Valorant had defaulted to 8k even though the desktop resolution was set to the recommended 1080p.

If you run games in fullscreen mode then the game will take control of the screen settings when it is open, and the desktop settings are irrelevant.

If you have a second monitor you can open up your desktop screen settings on the side and watch what happens. When you open up the game what it really does is quickly go and change your desktop resolution to 8K or whatever you have set in the game settings. Then whenever you minimize or exit the application it will quickly go and change it back to 1080p or whatever you had it at before.

Interesting that I had never opened the game before but yet it defaulted to 8k even though the desktop resolution was set to 1080p.

But since the monitor isn't actually an 8K monitor, it doesn't mean anything. The GPU can tell you that you're the king of England, but you'll still get an icy reception when you try and walk into Buckingham Palace to get your crown.
