If my onboard audio is dying would it affect my USB headset?

Been hearing static popping in my headset that fit an issue on another thread on TH that someone made. That guy too used a USB headset and even some normal 2.3(2.5?) headset.

So I was confused, doesn't a USB headset use its own sound thing that bypasses a Motherboards onboard audio? If it does why would the Motherboards onboard audio which is dying cause pop's and whatnot in a USB headset?

Or am I missing something?

Anyways I was just curious. I plan to get an audio card and a new headset like the guy said to on that other thread. This is more of a general question.

The onboard audio sound card is connected to the southbridge(or what is now the Platform Control Hub), along with all your other peripherals (including the USB ports). In this way, the onboard audio is able to communicate with the usb through the southbridge, providing you with audio through to the usb headset. Of course, a dedicated sound card would also work in a similar fashion.

You can watch this video for some info on chipsets/NB/SB/PCH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gfA3H5XTAE
Here is link to a site more on onboard audio: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/how-on-board-audio-works/2/

I am not an expert, so I am really basing this off of what I read and learn online.

It depends on the headset.
If the headset comes with it's own USB soundcard then it shouldn't matter as I understand it
If it's a headset that uses the USB only for power then it's a different story.
If it's a USB soundcard but uses the audio jacks then it depends if the DAC is failing (which wouldn't matter) or if the jacks would fail (which would matter)

Are you guys saying I might have a more serious issue?

I'm not having any other problems with my PC whatsoever. I have also completely reinstalled windows to make sure it wasn't a software issue.

The sound is not really noticable outside of voip programs and under certain circumstances. I don't hear it whatsoever during movies or music (That I can tell) and when no sound is playing.

I'm having the same issue this guy was having: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2903763/audio-popping-beginning-sound.html

I have this motherboard: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z170-P/
