If my OS is on an SSD and I install a virus on a hard drive could my OS become infected?

If I have just my OS on an SSD and I install ransomware on my HDD, could my OS become infected even if it is located on a different drive?

It could and i don't ecourage you to install ransomware, ever. Why would you need to do this?

+1 on why would you do this?

Aside from the fact you usually don't get to pick where ransomware is installed, but if somehow you did, it will certainly still take over the OS no matter what drive.

Only someone wanting to test their copy of a virus would install a virus on a computer.
No one would install ransomware on their own computer if they had no ill intentions in the near future.
