If you upgrade to 7 is 10 free?

I have an old Vista laptop that I use for very little so no real need to replace it (I have a Win 10 laptop and an iPad).
I know Win 10 upgrade is not free for Vista systems, but is for Win 7 systems. If I upgraded to Win 7, would I then be eligible for the free Win 10 upgrade? Or is there a little more to it???
Of course, even just a cheap update to Win 7 might be worth it???
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
Bob

Solution
Nope, I've upgraded 3 machines so far from 7 to 10, without stopping by 8 on the way.

As to the OP's question, if you upgraded it to 7 (from vista) that would be a paid upgrade, so that would give you a 7 license can't see why you shouldn't get to 10 from there. BUT it may be just as cheap to buy a 10 license. And less risky.

No, as the only way to upgrade to 10 from 7 is to 8 then to 10, or buying a windows 10.

For users that had windows 7 when windows 8 was released, you had 1 year for your free upgrade. Then, when windows 10 came out, windows 8 members also had 1 year to upgrade.

Sorry to say the only way you can get Windows 10 is to Buy it seperatly.

As far as the general end user is concerned... If you have windows 7, even if that was its self an upgrade from vista, you qualify for the upgrade.

I have 3 laptops that have gone that exact route.

I have obviously been misunderstood. I clearly stated in my post, that was a free option. Windows 8 was a free upgrade after it was released for a while. Maybe this is different where you live, but in the US there was in my state.

Following the Windows 8 free upgrade, when Windows 10 came out, you have around a 6 months-1 year to upgrade for FREE.

Notice that I am simply answering the OP's question, that NO, there is no way to upgrade from his OS-10 for free.

He said "if I upgraded to Win 7". There is a free upgrade from 7 to 10 at the moment, I'm pretty sure.

And no, unksol, I don't smoke anything... I tend to stay away from drugs/cigarettes. Phillip Corcoran if you don't think people live on earth... I don't know what to say

That's strange... I guess I was cheating the system when I upgraded from 7 to 10 for free yesterday on my rebuilt PC.
You should admit that your answer is false.

Im saying from his current OS, read more carefully.

His "current OS" is Vista, but that was not his question. His question was if he should pay for Windows 7 which he can get free Win10 upgrade on, and doing that IS much cheaper than buying Windiws 10 out of the box.

The phrasing was a little hard to understand, thanks for the clarification. It is much cheaper as windows 7 liscenses are only 20 dollars or so.

No problem man :)

If that is a fake license you are precisely back where you started from.

There was no flaming war here, just a correction.

the only words said to you on this subject from moderators are:

Nope, I've upgraded 3 machines so far from 7 to 10, without stopping by 8 on the way.

So wrong Captain. Which planet have you been living on this past six months?

Where is the petty insult and the flame war from the moderators?

If I had been some hotheaded youth, the flame war would of already started, with you igniting the spark. Lets make it clear, everyone wants to help. You not only falsely interpreted my post, yet did not tell me in what ways I "was so wrong" and basically stated (in a smart tone) that I'm stupid.

What kind of moderator are you? Not starting an arguement, but as a moderator, you should not be insulting others. Realize that everyone here wants to help, and instead of saying someone was purely wrong, you could have stated in what ways and read more carefully.

According to 13thmonkey, stating someone is stupid is a correction? From when?

It is to my disappointment that even someone that works here, dosen't take the time to read other's posts carefully, and quickly adds a sharp rebuttal that does not benefit the situation at all

I'm sure you know as well, but Tom's Hardware is a place to benefit others with their problems. We all have the same goal. I'm positive that the OP simply wants to know if he should upgrade to 7 and then 10, or just buy 10, and so far; you have not provided a clear solution, and have targeted me because you read my post incorrectly.

"If that is a fake license you are precisely back where you started from." And you're saying nobody's starting a flame war? Do some research, for god's sake! I'm sure you have access to google????

So far in this thread, you have not only provided a bad image for yourself, but for the whole of Tom's Hardware. As a moderator it should be your job to help the OP solve his problem, instead of misreading other's posts and starting a potential war.

I'm talking to both 13thmonkey and Phillip.

Hi Captain, I'm going to post this here as there is information that the OP might find useful, beyond this we will communicate via PM, and if you wish you can get another mod involved if you wish.

To clear up any doubt, we do not work for Toms, we are volunteers with experience. There are more senior mods you can talk to.

The OP stated:
I know Win 10 upgrade is not free for Vista systems, but is for Win 7 systems. If I upgraded to Win 7, would I then be eligible for the free Win 10 upgrade? Or is there a little more to it???

Your response:
No, as the only way to upgrade to 10 from 7 is to 8 then to 10, or buying a windows 10.
Is Simpy incorrect, going from 7 to 10 has always been an option, 8 was not needed.

My response indicates such.
Nope, I've upgraded 3 machines so far from 7 to 10, without stopping by 8 on the way.

As does Phillips
So wrong Captain. Which planet have you been living on this past six months?

There were no further moderator comments directed at you in anyway and then you stated.:
It seems like tom's hardware is a pretty hostile enviorment... a simple misunderstanding causes even moderators to resort to flaming wars and petty insults.

The rest of the conversation is irrelevant. As the flaming had already started by this point according to your post.

Once challenged on this, you claimed that we called you stupid, never happened as far as I can see.

And then this from you:
"If that is a fake license you are precisely back where you started from." And you're saying nobody's starting a flame war? Do some research, for god's sake! I'm sure you have access to google????
And this is the piece that is of interest to the OP.

A fake license is a fake license and may not give you right to upgrade to 10. It may give you 12 months if it is an old technet license, or until someone else uses it if it is being frequently resold. So the OP is precisely back where they started from with no legitimate path to 10. I'm not sure what google has to do with this.

The remainder of your latest comment:
If I had been some hotheaded youth, the flame war would of already started, with you igniting the spark. Lets make it clear, everyone wants to help. You not only falsely interpreted my post, yet did not tell me in what ways I "was so wrong" and basically stated (in a smart tone) that I'm stupid.
So this is where stupid comes from, from your interpretation.
As you can see from above we did not falsely interpret your post, you explicitly said no path from 7 to 10 without going via 8. No false interpretation there then.

And then:
What kind of moderator are you? Not starting an argument, but as a moderator, you should not be insulting others. Realize that everyone here wants to help, and instead of saying someone was purely wrong, you could have stated in what ways and read more carefully.
We did very explicitly state in what ways you were wrong, and please point out the insult, again it's not really present is it.

And:
It is to my disappointment that even someone that works here, dosen't take the time to read other's posts carefully, and quickly adds a sharp rebuttal that does not benefit the situation at all
We did read your response carefully, that's how we were able to point out in what ways you were wrong.

And:
I'm sure you know as well, but Tom's Hardware is a place to benefit others with their problems. We all have the same goal. I'm positive that the OP simply wants to know if he should upgrade to 7 and then 10, or just buy 10, and so far; you have not provided a clear solution, and have targeted me because you read my post incorrectly.
Yes you were targetted specifically for providing false information (as discussed above).
That's your interpretation of what the OP wants although:
Of course, even just a cheap update to Win 7 might be worth it???
puts that interpretation in doubt.

As for not providing a clear solution:
As to the OP's question, if you upgraded it to 7 (from vista) that would be a paid upgrade, so that would give you a 7 license can't see why you shouldn't get to 10 from there. BUT it may be just as cheap to buy a 10 license. And less risky.
Third post, buying 10 is less risky.

And finally:
So far in this thread, you have not only provided a bad image for yourself, but for the whole of Tom's Hardware. As a moderator it should be your job to help the OP solve his problem, instead of misreading other's posts and starting a potential war.
No one is being aggressive but you.
We did help, see point immediately above this one.
We didn't misread any posts, you explicitly stated 7 to 10 is only possible via 8.

Now I've not liked having to do this in open forum Vs a PM, if you want to continue this we'll do it there. But I wanted to make it clear to the OP that:
a) you can go from 7 to 10
b) an upgrade from vista to 7 will (probably) let you get to 10.
c) buying 10 would be safer
d) buying a dodgy copy of 7 might leave you with something that can't get you to 10.

If you wish to involve another mod please do so.

You cannot Upgrade from Vista to 10 for free. You must first upgrade to 7 or 8/8.1
You can Upgrade from 7 or 8.1 directly to 10.

But if you are going to buy an Upgrade from Vista to 7, you might as well just buy Win 10 on its own and avoid the whole Upgrade foolishness.

If you like buying illicit OS licenses, sure. Go for it.
There is no valid Win 7 license for $20, or £20 or 20euro.
An upgrade license from Vista? Maybe cheap. But I doubt MS sells that anymore.

Key word there Sparky. likely.

Whatever...
I'm not going to get in a drawn out convo/argument about the non-validity of your £20 Win 7 Pro licenses.
If you choose to go that route, oh well. Enjoy your repurchase when that license is invalidated.
Or enjoy your system being hosed from a compromised install.

The OS costs what it costs. Just like any other part of the PC.

And buying a valid OS from a valid retailer, the fail rate is 0%.
