To all of you who's whining over Garrett's alledged improved combat
prowess: Pay close attention when you read about the difficulty
levels.

Interesting !

"The theme of overall gameplay flexibility extends to the difficulty
levels. You can choose from a few presets, but the neat thing here is
customization. Want to make it so that you're not allowed to kill
anyone? Click here. Want to go wild with bloodshed? Click there. The
difficulty system in Deadly Shadows offers some very subtle and
tweakable gradations. "

I wonmder if this means they've gone for a System Shock -style
difficulty levels ?

Say -

Loot - Medium Hard Expert
Stealth - Medium Hard Expert
Combat - Easy Medium Expert
Mission - Easy Medium Expert

So Loot would affect how much cash you need to collect over the level
(50%, 75%, 90%).

Stealth would affect how often you can be spotted (unlimited, 5
confirmed sightings, never)

Combat woul affect who, if anyone, you're allowed to kill (everyone,
just guards, no-one)

Mission - How many objectives per mission (1 less, normal amount, +1
extra difficult objective).

This would be sweet, but I think only the combat one is really likely.
And maybe the loot.

Up to 25 hours of gaming, apparently, if you hunt all the nooks and
crannies. That's not much. I wonder if they are planning expansions
?

I always wonder about this... does anyone know what Thief 1 and Thief 2 were
estimated at?

I play really slowly... "Shipping... and Receiving" took me over
_eight_hours_ of game time. So this "25 hours" will probably take me 100
hours. ;-)

It wouldn't matter, unless I stayed long enough for the morning shift to
arrive... I'd knocked out _everybody_. 🙂

LOL - yeah, I remember spending most of a day and night in Life of the
Party.

If the levels are similar to the first 2, with plenty to do, then 25
hours would be a little light.

He also says the 'In Between Mission' bits, where you're free to roam
the city, steal and buy stuff, is variable, as it's random each time,
so more, shall we say, *obsessive* taffers are going to get a lot more
value that the casual players.

I'm more optimistic every day. :)

I think that they were at pretty much the same length. Thing is, these
estimates don't really take into account the way a seasoned 😉taffer plays
the game -- occasionally sitting still for minutes on end just enjoying the
sights and sounds, and of course timing the patrol routes etc. My guess is
that we'll get an equally satisfying taffing experience, duration wise, from
TDS as we got from the previous titles.

Yeah 😉 I wouldn't worry. 25 hours is very likely an estimate of a very
straight-forward, not-stopping-to-smell-the-roses-kindofastyle of playing.

Why wouldn't they pad out the playtime with as much extra stuff as
possible? Wouldn't a longer playtime be a selling point?

So if 25 hours IS padded out, then the game actually must take 1-2 hours.

(You can finish Deus Ex 2 in less than 1 hour and complete all the
quests.)

According to the article - a straight run-through is 8 hours, IIRC.

Indeed. OTOH, I have to admit my prime motivation for the pointer was
that - as before - there will still be actual difficulty levels. Why
whine over Garrett's improved combat prowess when you won't be able to
utilize it on a difficulty level befitting Real Men (tm)? 😛

Why? The quote clearly suggests that you can customize a shitload of
things.

Consider this: Thief 2 had 15 missions. If you were to play through
Thief 2 in 25 hours, you'd have 1hr 40 mins for each missions on
average. That's not bad at all, really. IIRC, the time counter in the
saves menu rarely surpassed two hours in T2.

lol - the memories :)

Remember when those few taffers on TLG forums were trying to beat each
others record on Baffords?

What was the fastest time? 22 seconds or 18 or something equaly ridiculous!
