IL2 gunner ammo question

A quick question from someone who doesn't know much about this stuff
but is interested in learning more...

Now and again (when I can't be bothered to set up the joystick and
pedals etc) I have a go at flying in one of the American bombers as a
gunner. In no time at all I run out of ammo (I know I can turn
unlimited on but that is not my point). Is the amount of ammo in IL2
realistic? From various WWII footage I've watched, and from reading
'The man who flew the Memphis Belle', it seems that bombers often had
fighters attacking them in large numbers. How did the gunners manage to
conserve their ammo? Could the guns be re-armed?

In WWII, most of the "Big" bombers' gunners, actually carried "Extra" ammo
on board to add to the "designed" ammo load for their weapons. I wonder how
often they ever really needed extra ammo, since "all" the bombers gunners
seldom had targets for much of the mission.
