I let my dad use my HDD all the time to watch movies. Whenever I eject it the computer makes a noise. Im afraid it isn't ejecting properly. Can someone tell me if this is normal or not?

Solution
If it's sort of a "bum-bum" noise from the speaker, this is just Windows making a signal that a device has been plugged in or unplugged. Is this the sound you hear?

When you eject the drive, do you properly unmount it first? In the system tray, probably in the section that pops up when you click the little arrow near the clock, there's an icon "safely remove drives." Make sure to click this and then click the removable HDD first before you unplug it. Removing a drive while it is still in use can corrupt the data on the drive.

Yes it makes the bum-bum noise and what do u mean properly unmount it?

Like I said, don't just unplug it when you're done. Above I posted a picture to point out the icon in the system tray you should look for. Click there and you'll get a list of devices which can be removed. Click on the device and wait for Windows to generate a message "it is safe to unplug" or something like that. If it says instead the device cannot be stopped right now because some program is using it, close any Explorer windows showing the drive, or any program (like a media player) which had been running a file from that drive and then try again to safely remove.

There is some risk of corrupting the external hard drive (causing errors) if you unplug it when Windows is reading from or writing to it.

I always do that but I use it for my dad's windows and my macbook air is this ok considering it's formatted for both of them?
