I'm always asked "What would you like to..."

When I click a link on say, an MPG, or any file on the net, with IE5.5, it ALWAYS gives me the "What would you like to do with this file, save, or run" dialogue.

I unchecked the "ask this every time" box, and it doesn't work! Every time, it comes back, and the box is checked, to ask every time. It is making me very mad!!! Doesn't matter what kind of files they are... Zip, rar, exe, mp3, mpg, avi, any file format!!!

I am using Windows ME and Internet Explorer 5.5
I have a cable internet connection with @home. This didn't do this ever before, only since I've had this Windows ME computer. And yes, it is a CLEAN install of Windows ME in case you wonder.

Thanks in Advance

Well if the box didnt come up, you would not have any options as to what you wanted to do, If it automatically opened it without asking you and you only wanted to save it, you would be complaining that it didnt give you an option, LOL

I don't WANT that option, as I'm talking about media files here, (mp3, mpg, avi, and others)... When I click a file, I want to watch it immediately, not fiddle with some stupid check box every time, and waste a few seconds... It really is an inconvenience to me...
If I wanted to save the file, I would click file/save from within Windows Media Player...

Please, anyone help me!

Maybe U want try to use Opera or Netscape instead?

And they said schizophrenia is annoying?

schizophrenia?

who said anything about that.

no arguments please, this is a windows me + media player 6.4 error.
I don't like mplayer 7, because of its massivness (no, i wont use it, period!), so i switched back to 6.4, which is included in winME, only hidden...

anyway, the browser i dont think has anything to do with it... because if i have a file on disk, and type, say... http://c:/movie.mpg, it comes right up.

so far, im thinking it can be fixed in the registry. ill try (prob. fail too!)

please people, keep the responses/similar exp. comin!

You are making the assumption that there is a o/s that dosent think the users are idiots, I have yet to find one

OK, Windows ME unfortunatly is designed to be idiot proof. Here is how you deal with that problem. Try installing fresh copies of the programs that you use to run those files. i.e. winamp for mp3's, quicktime for video's, etc. Make sure that if it gives you options to associate itself with certain media files like mp3's you let it do so. Once the program is associated with that type of file ME shouldn't ask you what to do with it any more.

Also make sure you security levels are set to low. That might also be the problem.

I don't think file associations are an issue here, but I do think you are on the right track with security settings. I have my settings set custom to prevent cookies that I don't want and the download prompt to "always ask this question" is greyed out with a permanent check to enable. I also think that windows is asking this question only about the specific file that you are downloading. If you remove the check from the box, and then download the exact same file, I don't think you will be prompted. I need to reset my security settings to test this. Pretty lame if I'm correct, because you don't very often download the exact same file over and over again.
