Hello, lovely citizens of Tom's Hardware. I appear to have run into a slight (and by 'slight', I mean monumental) problem with my desktop PC. Today has been a very tiresome day, to say the least, and this little issue is the proverbial cherry on top of this <insert foul word here>-sundae.
Earlier this morning, I took my graphics cards out for routine maintenance, namely reapplying the thermal paste to only one of them, as I had dangerously high temperatures (up to 102°C, even with a custom fan profile and an external fan blowing cool air at the case) and it was a good thing I did, as there were gobs and mounds of the stuff all over the place, to which I carefully cleaned and reapplied some better quality paste. I plug everything back in, and everything is hunky-dorey. Then, fast forward about 2 hours, I hear clicking coming from one of the cards. After investigating, I find that one of the fans on the card that I did nothing more than blow air through had stopped spinning. The cause? Two fan blades had come loose. I shut down the computer, remove the cards again, and learn that after that incident, there were another 3 blades on the card I applies thermal paste to had come loose in the same fashion. The motors on both of the fans are perfectly fine and undamaged, so I proceeded to reinstall the cards after dealing with the rogue fan blades. It was then when I decided to install the old RAM I had saved when I got a new 8gb stick, to which the computer began to act very strangely. It would make it to POST, the computer beeps as it always did, but there was a problem. There was no video output. After searching around for a bit, I was unable to come to a solution. I used both the card that I disassembled and the one that I left untouched as a source for video output, neither worked. I tried using only one card. Neither worked. I tried using a different monitor. Still didn't get a signal. I checked where it plugs into my monitor. That plug is fine. As I began typing this thread up, I had my headphones on for no real reason, and I heard the Windows Login jingle. So whatever was going on, the computer seems fine; just no video output. So as of right now, I believe that I am sitting at the desktop, just without any video. My friend has confirmed that I am online on Steam. Can anyone offer any tips? Kinda desperate at this point.
P.S. I have also tried using an old GTS 450 I had lying around, which also does not get any signal.
UPDATE! I'm not sure how or why, but after resetting my time to be correct, SSL errors have disappeared, and I can see images on any webpage. Everything is back up and running. Thanks for helping; this whole day has been a giant fustercluck that didn't throw any punches. Now I just need to figure out how to make this HDMI cable not look so... ugly.
