I'm building a rig

I installed my graphic card, sound card, nic, router, memory, drivers before and everything works.

How hard is it to install a cpu, and a motherboard? It come with instructions right? Just wondering if I can install these parts myself.

I know static can damage my cards so I touch the frame of my case to discharge static from my body.

i built my computer never having done it before.... dont worry about static all that much just keep yur fingers away from the metal bits and everything should be fine oh and resist the urge to rub balloons off yur wooly jumper when yur doing it as well 😀

most of it involves screwing the mobo into place (easy and obvious how to do) dropping the cpu into place (easy just unlock the arm let the chip DROP dont force the cpu in and lock it down.
then the cpu fan... this is the trickyish bit... just put a thin layer of thermal paste on the cpu core (the metal nit in the middle of chip) and then attach the fan. i have AMD so i have no experience of p4 fan but attaching the fan is simple but requires a surprising amout of force to get the clips secured... i have taken of and installed 3 different fans and each required alot of pressure and cursing and i havent damaged it yet... just be careful not to stab yur mobo to death and maybe take a dry run attaching the fan to the socket minus the chip so u know what yur doing...

apart from that the only other thing u might need to do is attach wires from the case to the mobo (for hard disk lights or usb sockets etc) this should all be on the case and mobo manual...

to cut this story short i did it myself... its a doddle and obvious what should be done... it just requires time to do it carefully and right.

Shouldnt be a problem, its a lot harder than you think to break a CPU...Ive bent the pins on mu CPU, I bent my graphics card, ive got water on my motherboard and dropped a screwdriver on it repeatedly... it all still works fine, as long as ur not a complete idiot it should be ok.
BTW you realise this is the GAMES section right?

I put together my first machine this past winter without ever having put one together before and, while nervewracking (it being my first time and all, being worried about screwing things up), things went pretty well. My advice is to be sure to read through the instruction booklet for the motherboard and case.

The thing most nreve wracking for me was the wiring. But the fist time I had to mess it with was changing out the old mobo for a new one. Before I took out the old mobo, I did my best to label the wiring with masking tape, noting what/where they went on the old mobo. That helped a bit after the old mobo was out and there was just a buch of loose wires flopping every which way.

When you get the new mobo, the manual will have a wiring diagram(s) just follw those. Also check the website of the the mobo maker, many times the pdf file you can d/l is better than the printed manual and is updated for revisions

EDIT: I've found it a good idea to first test the mobo out of the case. Just install cpu (with HSF), ram and vid card. Only after it posts do I put it in. It's a PITA to be putting it in and taking it out if you need trouble shoot something.

I didn't like the suggestion that p4man gave me.

He suggested me to buy these parts:

AOpen AK86-L ($89)
1 or 2x 512 MB Mushkin PC3500 Level2 or OCZ PC3500 Platinum L (~$90) each
Athlon 64 3000+ ($208)

I don't want that MB it's too slow. I want an nforce3 pro because it's faster. That cpu is too slow too I want something faster.

So this is what I'm thinking of buying:

This should all work together right? What do you guys think. Is this a good decision? I will also overclock. I never did this before though.

Im not sure if the athlon64's are multiplier locked, if they are then you will want slightly faster RAM (PC3500 or PC3700).

I have the atchlon 64 3200+ on an asus K8V deluxe and 1 gig corsair xms(pc 3200), and with default bios settings for ram and whatnot. i can only bump up bus speed to about 208, 209. if i put at 210 (2110 mghz) at next restart it tells me that overclocking has failed. Ive read reviews about only being able to put at 213 before losing stability.

seriously man. you don't know dipshiitz about custom computers. just go to your local shop and get one built for you. Overclocking? you can think about that once you know what's the job of a chipset, and no, you can't eat it
