I'm buying the last part for my rig and I need help choosing between AMD and Nvidia for a GPU.

Hello,

I'm working on my first ever PC build which is going to be used mainly for art and design stuff, but I will also play some games on it. A lot of people have been telling me that AMD is better right now, but over on the Adobe forums it's mostly all pro Nvidia because of CUDA implementation in Adobe software. I plan to buy this thing today, hopefully in the next few hours.

PSU will be 550W+ (haven't picked one yet)
Xeon e3 1230v3 and ASUS H97 motherboard
Monitor resolution will be 1080p but I might add a 1440p in there for my art stuff
Don't care who the maker is as long as it's a reputable company with a good RMA process just in case, and I also want the card to be cool (hot room in summer), and as quiet as possible.

If you could send any kind of benchmarks with your opinions on it to validate them that would also be awesome. :)

EDIT: Forgot to add that my budget is around $350 Canadian.

It might start a small war, but here is what I noticed today ( been on the site the whole day )
A good portion of the questions is about problems with AMD cards and an other good portion of the questions is about which nVIDIA card to get.

As good as you can get on Nvidia if Cuda performance is important, and will also play any game at 1080p very well.

I'm not sure how accurate the AMD issues are but I have heard AMDs track record isn't awesome when it comes to drivers.

Might be a struggle to potentially play games at 1440p though on that one :lol:

I was going to go with an EVGA 760 or an ASUS 760 originally, but then I considered going 770 so it lasts longer. Then I decided maybe AMD might be better and ended up here. I'm not a pro, I'm a beginner, but I plan to use a lot of the Adobe Suite and maybe Vegas, but I'll probably try Premiere and see if I can learn it cause Vegas is hard and super technical. I'm an artist, so I'm just looking to build something that can handle Adobe Suite well and help me along. I will also be recording my screen using Fraps or something similar for speed drawings and tutorials.

nvidia tend to be better outside of gaming aswell, the 760 can run games on high at stable fps, but for 1440p and for ultra settings in games, the 770 is better

I would go for Nvidia to be honest, cuda has been used in adobe for ages, but AMD support is pretty new.

There are two types of games; fast action shooter type and slower strategy type games.
If you play fast shooter games, then a strong and expensive graphics card is in order.
For slower strategy games like CIV-4 then even integrated graphics may be playable.

Again, although Adobe now supports OpenCL which makes them run better than before on AMD cards, OpenCL does not have either the widespread support or performance of CUDA. Read the various articles on the above site to learn why, to learn how (770 has no native CUDA support for example and must be "enabled" manually), and the newest card is not necessarily the best card.

Not all strategy games are like Civ-4. I wouldnt like to play Rome 2 on integrated graphics!

At what FPS?

Shogun II is 2 years older than Rome II. Anyway, we are veering away from the point. If he says what types of games he wants to play, we can see if the 770 will be a wasted purchase.
