Hey everyone! Recently, I've noticed that when I touch anything metal in my room (mainly any parts of my PC) that I get a varying degree of a static shock. It's nothing crazy, it's just very strange. I"m worried that this can cause damage to my PC! Let me know if you've had anything like this before!

P.S. I'm happy to answer any questions!

Hi

If you wont touch inside of your PC (motherboard or other components) it should be fine. Normal PC cases are grounded (or should be) and if you touch PC case from outside it should protect your hardware inside from these random static shocks. Peripherals like keyboard and mouse are generally made from plastic which shouldn't be conductive I assume you dont get these jolts if you touch mouse or keyboard.

If you would have need to touch some components inside you should first discharge by touching something grounded.
Like frame of PC case (asssuming its metalic and grounded) or your room radiator pipes or generally any grounded metal.
There are antistatic wrist bands which you put on your wrist and attach them to something grounded...

Reason for your static charges if it started happening recently may be various... new carpet, clothes, pc chair, ...
Certain materials/fabric when you sit/move on them can produce static charge which build up on your surface and discharge when you touch something grounded like your PC.

Solution

This is most likely because of improper grounding of power socket.
You should consult professional electrician on this. Possibly rewiring of electric installation is necessary.
