All ram will have a default speed at which it will boot and give you access to the bios.
If your motherboard and cpu support a higher speed, the bios is where you set the faster speed.

Your plan will work, but perhaps you are wasting money.

The CPU spec isn't generally where the limitation is. Pretty much ALL Intel CPUs, including i7's and i9's, for latest gen models, will only show a maximum of 2933mhz for 10th Gen models, 2666mhz for 9th Gen, and so on, but all of those will run at faster memory speeds with an unlocked motherboard and faster memory kit. The spec shown on the CPU product page is almost never the actual limitation for the memory, often not even with locked CPUs, because in a lot of cases you could run them with MUCH faster memory on a Z board. So, that isn't what you ever want to go by.

Always go by what the motherboard says, not the CPU "spec". The spec on the CPU product page is generally only the "natively supported speed", which is different than the limitation imposed by the motherboard. Whether the motherboard gives a different limit based on CPU model or not is a different story.
