Difficult to say since you do not quote clock speed or FSB on any of the systems.

Friend #7 is going to have a bad day with that 8MB Matrox card though, unless you are just planning on playing solitaire time trials.

The fact that you can get that many people together with fast computers is pretty good. All my friends are starving college students with old rigs...nonetheless, almost all those rigs are bottlenecked to death. A p4 1.5 with a TNT???? Is that a dell? Your friends need good video cards and you'll be ready.

I'd bring Diablo2, Quake3, UnrealTourny, AOE2, and Counterstrike or Rainbow six and family to the table and see what flies...

Jeez - I missed that - typical vendor spec, a really fast CPU with a crippled video system and too little memory - probably PC600 at that.

I'd take either friend 1 or friend 8 for best gaming system.

A hub will work, its just that a switch is much more efficient.
A hub just basically broadcasts all of the data to all other connected ports. Only the system that the data is intended for actually acknowledges it of course. But this can bog down the networked systems, since the data is going to all systems instead of just the one that needs it.

A switch on the other hand, routes the data to the correct port, so this keeps the other ports free of unnecessary traffic. In an office setup, or any large setup such as yours, I would definately reccomend a switch, as it will help greatly when people are transfering files at the same time. Also, it you have one 10 base t nic and the rest 100 base t, with a hub all the data gets slowed to the slowest transfer rate, with a switch this is not the case.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!

its hard to tell who has the best system because they all have at least one obvious shortcoming. i would go with friend #1 but he has a radeon sdr and only 128 mb ram. friend #5 aint bad either with the p4 and a tnt2 ultra.

Even a broken watch is right twice a day...

I think you made them up to grab our attention :) Remember some games are more cpu intensive, some are graphic card intensive. It depends on what you're playing. I'd say that for most games Friend #1 has the best all round system (fastish processor with good graphic card). That said he does have a slow mobo chipset and hard drive.

Well its 3 hub's (100mb fast ethernet)hooked together.

Well the server has:
Dual P2 450 xeon 1mb
512mb PC100 sdram
18gb 7200rpm SCSI2
(2) 10/100 fast ethernet cards

So all 8 pc's using 100mb connection should be alot of fun.

Aparently you dont seem to know something. You can only stack two hubs only not 3 you have to have a switch or a some sort of repeater. Hubs also cannot do 100 mbits. And why would you want a hub? They only run half duplex mode, can only send or recieve data to and from a node, switches can do sends and recieves at the same time. With hub you get shared bandwith by default hubs have 100mbits bandwith if distributed amongst 5 users they only get 20 each, with a switch it 200mbit fer each user (100mbits full duplex 20 mbits fer the 10 mbits guys). And the biggest fall back of hubs they waste a huge amount of bandwith by broadcasting the packets to all the nodes, while a switch send them right where they are supposed to go. Well since there is supposed to be Novel and mcse's here i find it hard no one other than me caught that. later guys.

Sorry to say that is some of the worst grammar I have ever seen. I know how it all works, but even I had a hard time understanding that.

When we do a LAN party over here, it's on these rigs:
T-bird 1 gig, mx, 256MB ram
Athlon 700, geforce sdr, 128
p3 450, voodoo2, 64
k6-2 500, voodoo2, 64

They're not near the perfect systems, but when you're only playing q3a you only want to kick the crap out of other people so you don't actually enjoy the scenery. We have them connected on 10Mb BNC nic and it runs fine. So I'm asking, if we get more people I guess we need a switch like that. How much does it cost? I found an 8 port hub (10Mb) for 40$. I can't see how any game can actually use 100Mb since people who play on 128 ISDN have a good time.

Sh!t Happens.
