Right not I have windows 98 2nd edition. I was looking to upgrade and the CD disk for 2000 did not work. I tried going USB but in the bios it didn't recognize it. I replaced the CD drive to make sure it wasn't the drive and it wasn't the case.
I have the gateway performance 800. I figured out the problem but I'm stuck on a screen saying starting windows. My solution was taking the hard drive out and putting it in my optiplex and installing it there. I don't even have a GB of ram lol, windows 7,8, or 10 would be a nightmare. I'm using this computer to play old CD games. Also can't get into safe mode.
I'm so sorry Anthony 🙁 I'm not going to be able to help a great deal. Your system dates back to 2000 and now belongs in a museum. My only advice would be to update your system.
Thanks for effort and your suggestions, but I want it to be old because I like the look and feel. For my modern gaming needs I use the ASUS G751JY laptop with 4 core Intel Core i7-4720HQ 2.6GHz, 16 gb ram, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M with 4GB DDR5 VRAM. Thanks again for support and I will continue to find a solution.
