Damn, I returned my GTX 970 for the R9290x and am getting stutter on Youtube videos. 1080 videos are watchable but not as smooth and slick looking as they were on the 970. Now, 4K youtube videos look like the audio is out of sync and the FPS is very low, videos ive watched before on the 970 without any issues.

Jeez, whats the deal here? Any help is appreciated.

Are you having a laugh. There is no way on earth that a r9 290x isn't capable of running you-nube at 4k. Your drivers? are they up to date. The player your using for u-tube? Have you removed everything to do with NVidia before you installed Amd?.

So many videos and reviews said the r9 290x handles 4k better than the 970. I am not sure what is happening but here is just an example. In the link, the 4k setting is sluggish, but the 1080 is perfect

This sluggishness is not present on the 4k digital videos I have, which play the video files normally and nicely. Seems its only sluggish on Youtube. I've uninstalled the nvidia drivers, and just reinstalled the amd drivers, it still is a problem.

It's definitely a driver issue. You may want to uninstall everything, and if you have onboard video, remove the AMD card, boot from the onboard, and shut it down, then reinstall the card. Or just remove the card, power on the PC, power it off. Put the card back in, reinstall the driver

So, I take it AMD doesn't really update their drivers often? Ive little experience with them, but it seems like the r9 290 and 4k youtube videos have been around for quite some time now. Can anyone confirm if this was a problem before the latest update? I mean, if they havent fixed this issue from the start then i guess there is no reason to hope for a driver fix.

My last AMD driver update was 12/9/2014
My last Nvidia driver update was last week or something.

AMD drivers are awful.

it's not a driver issue as in, the drivers are bad. It's a driver issue as in, they are not installed right or more than one driver is being used.
You may want to boot into Safemode and see if any drivers are lurking in the device manager there.

The GTX 970 on my 4k monitor at 60hz had no display incompatibility issues that were inconsistent. Sometimes the desktop would appear, sometimes it wouldn't. There is a huge thing about it on the Geforce forums with hundreds of others dealing with the issue. The 290x doesn't even support 60hz, which I didn't know about until after I got it of course... Had no stutter with the GTX 970 on youtube 4k videos, but there is a lot of choppiness now with the 290x. All I did was trade problem A for problem B.

Sounds like the problem is the monitor and not the videocards.
