I'm looking for a laptop for school. I've always had great gaming desk tops and found no use for a laptop until now. I consider myself a stat chaser when it comes to buying PCs. The market is flooded with laptops with 4k monitors but not the power to use them. I've customized some nice MSI ghost and stealth's that run around $2000, but if it's not going to preform as well as a desktop, I feel I should settle for the Toshiba Satellite Radius for it's flexibility and battery life.

My school instructor recommended:
Capable processor
16GB ram
Optical drive

I'd like:
Thin, light and flexible
Cutting edge so I don't have to replace it soon
4 hour classes, so a battery life of at least that
Capable of gaming

For not performing as well as a desktop, that depends on what desktop. A $2,000 laptop won't be as fast as a $2,000 desktop of course, but it will match any average gaming desktop. Battery life in a system for gaming will also be an issue, so will it being "thin and light". You can't have everything in a single system in a laptop. Pick your main points, easy to carry and long battery life, or being able to play demanding games at past low.

Something like the Lenovo Y50 is OK for mid-low gaming and is not very big.
