Hi there, I'm looking for help on choosing a processor for a new build. I want the CPU to be fairly powerful and future proof. My new pc build is going to be used for gaming and design (3D design may be involved). The i7 4790k and 6700k are in my budget for a CPU (under £300).

If you could help me in any way I'll appreciate it, thanks. (feel free to recommend a different processor)

Whether it is worth is down to you, if you absolutely need a six core cpu then the i7 5820k will do its job. It does offers 28 pcie lanes with the i7 5820k.
If I was to upgrade I would have a choice between these parts:
X99...
I was going to get a x99 set up and i decided to wait for the Skylake stuff and the Skylake stuff is going to cost me at least £300 cheaper but i would like to know the answer to this

The X99 would still be better for application that scale well with multi cores such as video editing, rendering etc...
The mainstream Skylake cpu aren't anything interesting. We still waiting if Skylake-E is anything special.

The X99 chipset makes the motherboard extra expensive, I'm not sure if it's worth it?

A Haswell build might be more ideal and cheaper if you already got DDR3 ram but the next time you upgrade, you will have to get new cpu, new motherboard and new ram.
However, if you take the Gigabyte's promotion "Take one Get two", you could get a Z97 Ultra durable black edition motherboard and qualify a free upgrade to Z170 or any future counterpart within the warranty period. Of course that promotion can change during the 5 year warranty period.
