I'm doing a new build. I have all of the components and I was about to start assembly when it suddenly occurred to me that my cpu cooler might be woefully inadequate for the AMD Ryzen 9 5900x that I had ordered.
It seems that I have made a pretty stupid mistake, but in my defense I may have been rushing a little bit when I chose my components. One of the things I was anxious about was choosing a cpu cooler that actually fit in my case, a corsair 4000d airflow. In my muddled thinking I chose one of the smaller options available, a Noctua NH-U9S chromax.black, which is well shorter than the 170mm maximum in my case.
I assumed that since I planned to do no overclocking the NH-U9S would be fine, but only now has it occurred to me that I was wrong. It seems that a NH-U9S can handle the 5900x at base clock speeds, but not boost clock speeds, meaning that I would have been dealing with a nightmare of consistently high temps and throttled performance. I have no choice, it seems, but to return it and order a replacement, but I figure that since I already screwed up once it can't hurt to ask before I make my decision.
I'm still settled on Noctua even though I think their marketing was slightly deceptive. The research of done suggests that even the NH-U12S might not be fully adequate so would I be ok with the NH-U12A chromax.black? All I want to do is to be able to play my cpu heavy strategy games and management sims without worrying about high temps and throttled performance.
EDIT: I might get the brown and beige version of the NH-U12A because it's $10 cheaper and I don't mind the color scheme and I guess I can add a couple extra case fans if temps still aren't ideal.
