I'm trying to lessen the bottleneck in my current build by upgrading my CPU

This is what my current build looks like:

Motherboard- Gigabyte Z170MX-Gaming 5 LGA 1151
CPU - Intel i7 6700k
Graphics Card- Gtx 1080 ti
RAM- 32gb 2400mhz DDR4

This is the first computer that I built; I did it almost 2 years ago. I'm not going to claim that I know a lot, but from what I've learned, my current CPU is bottle-necking my performance.. maybe not a lot, but it's noticeable. I use my pc for gaming, producing music, editing video's/photos, and other general tasks. I've been looking at the i7 8700k or the 8086k but pc part-picker sites are giving me mixed compatibility information. One is saying that these processors will work with my current hardware and the other is saying they won't. The socket type is the same LGA 1151, and the 850w thermaltake psu can handle it, so is there any reason why I can't upgrade to an i7 8700k/ 8086k?

What would lead you to believe your processor is bottlenecking your PC? The 6700k is still quite the powerful processor. Like Barty said, you won't be able to upgrade to an 8700k without a new board, thanks to intel liking to release chipsets every single generation. What monitor are you using as of now?

Thank you for clearing that up for me. My motherboard chipset is Intel Z170. It looks like an i7 7700 k is the highest I can go without having to buy a new motherboard.

I may call the manufacturers of my motherboard and ask them about it for a final word.

My Monitor: ASUS VG248QE 24" Full HD 1920x1080 144Hz 1ms HDMI Gaming Monitor

Right. General performance-wise, my computer is running fine. However in terms of gaming, after upgrading my GPU from a 980 ti 6gb hybrid to a 1080 ti 11gb, some games that were not performing that well on even medium settings like Dishonored 2 and Fallout 4(poorly optimized engine though), still aren't performing as well as I had hoped. I've done a lot of tinkering with graphics settings, overclocking my cpu and gpu, and optimizing windows 10 performance, but none of it has gotten me to a point where I'm satisfied with my performance. I always try to shoot for over 65 to 70 fps and I have no problem with turning settings down.. things like no anti aliasing, low quality shadows, stuff like that. Some games just don't run very well for me.. not even with medium settings at my monitor's native resolution for some reason; that's why I've been thinking about upgrading my CPU.

And I am aware that going from a 6700k to a 7700k isn't THAT great of an upgrade; that's why i was looking at the 8700k.
