I'm using public access wifi so the League of Legends PVP.net server won't let me log in... is there a way to fix that?

The patch screen will open just fine, and when I type in my username and password it says it's logging in, then says it couldn't connect. The link takes me to a website that won't work because it's a public network, even though my sharing is turned off. Is there something in the settings on my computer than can fix this or can I simply not play using this wifi??

Solution
public network routers will often block access to common ports used for gaming.
Sometimes you can configure your software to use a alternate port that is not blocked. It all depends on who/why the router was configured.

here is a list of ports the game uses

the router has to be configured to allow connections thru these ports for the game to work correctly.
