Im upgrading my computer and I have

Gtx 1060 3gb
intel core i5 3750
getting 16 gb of ddr3
600w power supply
and i am wanting to get MSI Z270 GAMING PLUS
I was mainly wanting to know if my i5 and if i upgraded to i7 would work

you should be looking at a Z77 board for the 3rd generation intel chips and DDR3

the Z270 board is made for the 7th generation intel chips and DDR4

i lied i have the intel core i5 3570 and im getting ddr4

there is no motherboard that will allow the DDR3 memory controller on the i5 3570 to run with DDR4
the Z270 board is made for the 7th generation intel chips and DDR4

you will either need a Z77 motherboard your current CPU and DDR3
or
A Z270 board DDR4 and a 7xxx intel chip.
