hello everyone,

i have an imac late 2009 and i decided to install an intel Xeon x3480 3.06ghz. when i go to about this mac there is written core i3 but with correct frequency and everything. when i use 3rd party software like CPUID for mac and also geekbench i get correct cpu name. i dont care about what there is written on about this mac but my main concern is that is the imac using the full potential of the xeon? remember that just the name is incorrect which is showing as i3 instead of xeon.

any ans all opinions would be much appreciated.

Thank you all.

wow thank you very much for searching for me, i already know that i can change the name of any thing in a mac but all that concerns me is that will the xeon be used to its full potential? and why it is not showing the correct CPU name ? iam really losing control

Geekbench will tell you if it is using the full potential via the score it gives you. Per their website an x3480 should get a single core score around 2300 and a multi core score of around 8500. The i3-540 (had to guess) gets single around 1700 multi around 3500.
By the way, I don't see the i3 introduced into the iMac until mid 2010, if you want to know exactly which model you have, put the serial in at everymac.com in the lookup section.

no. the iamc is faking it, it is showig an i3 instead of showing a xeon. now will the ram capacity affect the geeckbench ? or it just bench the cpu only and specifically ?

RAM will affect it a little but the score will still be close. I understand the iMac is faking what it shows in the about this mac. Geekbench shouldn't care and will test the hardware and give a score that will tell you what you are wanting to know... is it running like an i3 or like a Xeon.

Geekbench will show you individual scores for RAM, CPU, etc, with an overall score as well.
