Was repairing friends laptop today (Dell Inspiron N5010) and while checking the drives found that most of the image file format have been changed to .A640 file type.

Backed up all those files to another PC/hard disk and clean installing windows 10 on the laptop as i type this in.

My question to you guys is, Is this due to virus infection? Can i recover/repair those files back?

@thisisajaym :

You posted " that most of the image file format have been changed to .A640 file type."

So some images were left alone/as is with a .jpeg extension - correct? And no filenames were changed - correct?

Were the changed image files specific to some certain folders?

What about the full path leading to the folders/filenames with changed extensions? Any common subfolder along the path?

Make copies of some of "converted" image files ( .A640) and try changing those *.A640 back to ".jpeg" where the * is a wildcard for any given filename.

Is the image again viewable?

Are you saying that Jpeg's were converted to .a640?
Did your friend use backup, encryption, or compression sowtware?
A web search or A640 turns up nothing, so not a virus unless it's new.

Yes the web search is turning up to be a camera model. As per knowledge he did not use any encryption software.

Did as you said but nothing, File still not readable :(

Some folders are okay and only some folder seemed to get this problem.

What folders have the problem and which folders do not?

Is there some common path to the folders that diverges/branches into two longer paths leading to folders with the problem and folders without the problem?

Look at date and time stamps. Any common dates and times or patterns?
