Image thumbnails shown on Folder Preview but no files inside folders?

I have a really old XP machine that my family has had for years. There are a lot of pictures on it that my mom wants to get off but there's one problem. The image [strike]previews[/strike] thumbnails on the folder icon are there but when I open the folder, no pictures or files of any type. I'm assuming since the [strike]previews[/strike] thumbnails are there that the files still exist but I don't know how to retrieve them. Thanks!

i suppose this could happen if the pictures are deleted but the thumbs.db remains. Sorry, but i think your pictures are gone.
