just picked this drive up

wondering what fat - 16 or 32 - and why, will i not be able to run some apps ?

not interested in partitions, unless there is a good reason, only running one os system(98)

so - how many partitions ?

also - is the disk that ibm provide good for setting up, or just use the os utilities to set up

my rig is focused towards gaming

asus a7m266 - amd 761
1.33 266fsb t'bird
pc2100 2.5 256mb
gts2 32mb
sb live

thanks for any imput - and sorry if this is a rehash of old post - im new to tomshardware and boards :)

great stuff btw

I have a 30GB, as opposed to your 60GB (man, 30GB is big though...I'll tell ya...)

Anyways, I suggest having at least three: 1 primary for your OS (Win98), one logical for data, and one for the Win98 Swap file and backups in case the primary OS gets hosed.

I'm not sure how the software IBM provides looks like, but I used to use FDISK before buying Partition Magic 6.0 from PowerQuest. If you want to use FDISK, read <A HREF="http://content.techweb.com/winmag/columns/explorer/1999/1025.htm" target="_new">this article</A> before <A HREF="http://content.techweb.com/winmag/columns/explorer/2001/03.htm" target="_new">this one</A>.

Use FAT32 unless you have old Win3.1 apps you need to run...

I hope those articles are informative. The author is very helpful, too. If you liked those, perhaps going <A HREF="http://content.techweb.com/winmag/columns/explorer/backissu.htm" target="_new">here</A> and checking out his other issues will help expand your horizons...

you will need to use fat32 or you will end up having a lot of partitions due to the limitations of fat 16.
A lot of people seem to put win98 on one partition, then install apps on another, which is fine, BUT, they seem to be under thge impression that if the win98 partition needs wiping, then all the apps will still be fine, some will, some wont, when you do an install under windows, it doesnt simply copy loads of files willy-nilly from the cd to the hdd, it will copy lots of dll's etc to windows\system, and make registry entries etc, try it one day with office 2k- u get some BS about how it needs reinstalling because of missing registry entries.
However, having a seperate partition for mp3's, personal files etc is a good idea as unless you get total drive failiure, for all intents and purposes it is a seperate drive.

Basically, FAT32 just uses your hard drives space more efficiently than FAT16.

I feel the exact same way about this. In my setup, I meant data as in personal files, documents, mp3s, and DOWNLOADED programs. (Of course, I back these files to a CDR every once in awhile.)
