IMPORTANT! Can I dig up old files from laptop HDD?

I re-installed the windows on my old laptop with HDD a while ago. However, i forgot to back up some files.
Is there any magic trick to bring them back?

Not really, you need a lot of knowledge/time or bring it to a recovery specialist and expect to pay a lot of $$$
