I have an old gaming pc with some newer parts but most haven't been replaced yet and im trying to see which part of my pc needs some changes. Im kinda of a noob at building a pc. Thanks in advance.

Maybe 1500? Id prefer replacing some parts like the motherboard, HDD and cpu.

When I approach a build, I think it is always best to start with goals and that starts with Monitor.

Your monitor is the decoder of performance and the bridge to you the user.

If you have a bunch of old hardware, I am going to assume you have an old monitor and I would guess its 1080p 60hz.

If you just want to max out a 1080p 60 hz monitor, well that's pretty easy and cheap to do.

So what are your goals? You have a good healthy $1500 budget, and that's a good start, but need some more dialogue to deliver the best advice. What sorts of games do you play? What game do you play the most?

I want to play more AAA games if possible but my steam library has mostly indie games.
My pc is still doing fine with overwatch on the highest possible settings working just fine and games like Skyrim but unmodded work perfectly but I just want to get a little better performance hence why im not looking to get a completely new build.

I also would really like to start playing vr games. Like Alyx and Beat saber.( I'd say this is my main goal, playing some really good vr games)
I can up the budget but I prefer not to if possible.

Ok. Your current hardware is still ok for gaming even at 1080p. As your monitor resolution increases the load on the cpu decreases.

I would suggest you spend the $1,500 on a good SSD or two, a 1440p capable gpu and nice 27" monitor. These new parts can then be used on your next PC build in a year or two, if needed.

I'm for sure planning to put my OS on a SSD but can I use my HDD for storage or should I also use an SSD for that?
Also do you have any recommendations for a good gpu?

Do you think this would run Half life Alyx? Thats kind of the game I really want to play.

Your current CPU exceeds the minimum requirements.

An HDD in general is better for storage, games load quicker off the SSD.

What monitor do you have now? What resolution?

Your 1050ti will push 40-60 frames on ultra at 1080, so I don't know if upgrading is smart for you. Definitely no need to spend $1500 there.

Biggest upgrade for you is an SSD. I have had good luck with Crucial MX500s.

If you really want to upgrade your GPU, a 5600xt is a cheapish stop gap upgrade which will comfortably handle 1080p.

If you really want to spend your whole budget, perhaps an entire new setup built around a 5700xt / ryzen WITH an upgraded monitor - either a 1080p at 120+ HZ, or an entry level 1440p monitor.

Im kinda Just looking for the upgrades to run Alyx. I dont want to make a whole new build. That would be a waste of my money.
I will start with an SSD I suppose.

To go the VR route your looking at $400-$500 depending on the VR system and you'll need a good gpu to drive it. That would be a 5700xt or a 2070 Super.
