Improving performance of FS

Howdy, fellow make-pretend and real pilots.

I've been AWOL for a bit, partly because I had an OS problem that
screwed up the ability of FS to run for long periods on my machine
without crashing due to RAM congestion. In the process of dealing with
my problem (Hint: Don't ever call Microsoft "support" for help. All
they know how to do is bill your credit card for services they don't
render and put you on hold to listen to the Carpenters.) I discovered
something that has improved how FS runs on my computer quite a bit.

Maybe this is not news to everyone else here, but I don't recall seeing
it discussed before, so here goes. This applies to Windows XP Home, but
I'm sure other version of the OS have similar settings: Under Control
Panel, go to System, then click on the "Advanced" tab, then the
"settings" box. Under the tab "visual effects" click "Adjust for best
performance."

This will change a few cosmetic things. Windows menus will now just
appear rather than scrolling or fading into view. The menus will no
longer cast shadows. The little active programs on the task bar will
now just appear and disappear, rather than rolling or scooting over.
Any dialogue box with rounded edges will look a teensy-weeny bit
rougher. If you can't live without these kinds of niceties, you can
always reset your options when you exit FS; me, I disabled this stuff
permanently and don't notice the difference.

But what a difference it makes for me with FS! I'm getting much better
frame rates in all situations. There's no stuttering when I do a lot of
shifting of views with the little "hat" button on the yoke. Cloudy
skies load faster. Things like that.

Now, as with everything in life, YMMV. But I'd advise everyone with
even minor performance issues to at least give it a try. If it doesn't
make a difference for you, it's easy enough to go back to the old way.

Happy vapor trails...

Not wanting to upgrade my hardware for the moment, I tried a tip I read in
this NG.

I re-installed FS2004 and all add-ons, etc onto a separate hard disk to the
drive I have my operating system on (XP Pro). Got an extra 5-6fps and FS2004
loads much quicker.
