In-line microphone not working?

Hi, I have a headset that uses an in-line microphone on an auxiliary cable type thing (similar to this: http://www.sybausa.com/pic/CL-CAB62059/phpXTtJ0r.jpg3.png) but my computer ignores the mic and the only sound it registers is a static sound when I touch the other end of the jack. I know it works because I tested it on another computer and it worked fine. I don't know how to get it to work, I've tried everything I can think of (installing new sound card drivers, plugging it into the rear mic jack etc.) the mic is set as the default and the sound levels are all the way up. The inline mic headphones use a different connection type than a reagular headset. You may need to split the mic and headset signal and route one to the headset input and the other to the mic.

The other thing is to check to make sure that the mic is enabled in audio options.
