In which circumstances do I need to have a gtx 980 over gtx 970?

I want to know what are the reason that force me to get gtx 980 rather than 970?

if you want to get ultra settings at 1440P with solid FPS or want to play at 4k.

There is no compelling reason other than performance.
GTX970 is suitable for 1080P and 1440P single monitors in general.

If you are playing fast action games on 4k or triple monitors, then GTX980 is good, but you may want dual cards for high frame rates.
